Saving in physical gold: five risks to understand first

Gold holds value over long periods but is not risk-free. Five risks and how to reduce each help savers stay in control.

Domestic gold bar prices have swung sharply: from a peak near 191 million VND per tael in late January 2026 to about 145 million by mid-September 2026. Anyone who bought at the top lost about a quarter of the value in eight months. Saving in gold means understanding the risks first.

1. Price risk

Gold moves with world prices, exchange rates, domestic demand and policy. Nobody knows tomorrow's price.

Reduce it: buy steadily each month rather than all at once; plan a long holding period; study the 5-year chart on Gold prices to understand the range.

2. Spread risk

Every buy and sell costs the gap between sell and buy prices, plus labour on jewellery.

Reduce it: choose low-labour forms such as plain 24K rings; avoid short-term trading; ask for the buy-back formula in writing.

3. Quality risk

Under-karat or under-weight gold is hard to spot by eye.

Reduce it: buy where the invoice states purity and weight, the piece is re-weighed in front of you, carries an identifier, and independent testing is promised in a dispute.

4. Storage risk

Gold at home can be stolen, lost or burnt.

Reduce it: a safe, property insurance, or custody under an agreement stating the gold is yours, segregated and insured. See the Gold custody agreement.

5. Liquidity risk

When you need cash fast, a shop may refuse, offer a low price or only allow exchanges.

Reduce it: choose a seller committed to buying back by a published formula every opening day; keep ID and an account in your name ready to receive funds quickly.

In short

Gold preserves value over the long term; it is not a way to get rich quickly. Disciplined savers who buy steadily, hold long and choose transparent sellers remove most of the risk that does not come from price.
